Protection of Customer Data

The financial services industry is subject to some of the most stringent requirements found outside of the government sector. Industry standards like those set by the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council and a host of government regulations regarding the protection of customer data, not to mention the possibility of purely financial loss, place a high standard to be met.

What is PCI DSS?

The Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council issued an information security standard for merchants that defines how payment card data must be protected. The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) aims to protect cardholder information. Any merchant that accepts payment cards (credit cards, debit cards, prepaid cards, etc.) is subject to the rules regarding the protection of card data. PCI DSS requirements include the following:

  • Develop and maintain secure systems and applications
  • Identify and authenticate access to system components
